How to prepare for the Deloitte interview

Technical round

Programming, OOP, DBMS, operating systems and your project, the core of most Deloitte fresher interviews.

1. What is the difference between a database and a data warehouse?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. A database (OLTP system) handles day-to-day transactions, such as orders and payments, with many small reads and writes and normalised tables.

  2. A data warehouse (OLAP system) stores historical data from many sources, organised for analysis and reporting, often in star or snowflake schemas, and is optimised for large read queries.

  3. Examples of warehouses include Snowflake, Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery.

2. What is ETL?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load: data is extracted from source systems, transformed (cleaned, validated, joined and aggregated) and loaded into a target such as a data warehouse.

  2. In ELT, raw data is loaded first and transformed inside the warehouse, which modern cloud warehouses make practical.

  3. Tools include Informatica, Azure Data Factory, SSIS and dbt.

3. What is the difference between VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP in Excel?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. VLOOKUP searches the first column of a range and returns a value from a column to the right by number, defaults to approximate match unless you set FALSE, and breaks if columns are inserted.

  2. XLOOKUP, available in newer Excel versions, takes separate lookup and return ranges, can look left, defaults to exact match, and can return a custom value if nothing is found.

  3. INDEX with MATCH is the older flexible alternative.

4. What is a pivot table, and when would you use it?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. A pivot table summarises large data sets by grouping and aggregating them, such as total sales by region and month, without writing formulas.

  2. You drag fields into rows, columns, values and filters.

  3. Use it to explore data quickly, find trends and build summary reports.

  4. Pivot charts and slicers make the summary visual and interactive.

5. What are the levels of software testing?

Answer flow · 5 steps
  1. Unit testing checks individual functions or classes, usually by developers.

  2. Integration testing checks that modules work together, such as an API with a database.

  3. System testing checks the complete application against requirements.

  4. User acceptance testing (UAT) is done by the client or users to confirm the system meets business needs before go-live.

  5. Regression testing re-checks existing features after changes.

6. What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. Symmetric encryption uses the same secret key to encrypt and decrypt, such as AES; it is fast but the key must be shared securely.

  2. Asymmetric encryption uses a public key to encrypt and a private key to decrypt, such as RSA; it solves key sharing but is slower.

  3. HTTPS uses both: asymmetric cryptography to agree on a key, then symmetric encryption for the data.

7. What is phishing, and how can organisations prevent it?

Phishing is a social engineering attack where attackers send fake emails, messages or websites that look genuine to trick people into revealing passwords, clicking malicious links or transferring money. Prevention includes security awareness training, email filtering, multi-factor authentication, verifying payment requests through a second channel, and checking sender addresses and links carefully.

8. Write a SQL query to find each department's highest-paid employee.

Use a window function to rank employees within each department by salary and keep rank one. Using RANK keeps ties; ROW_NUMBER would keep only one employee per department.

SELECT department, name, salary
FROM (
  SELECT department, name, salary,
RANK() OVER (PARTITION BY department ORDER BY salary DESC) AS rnk
  FROM employees
) ranked
WHERE rnk = 1;

9. What is the difference between Power BI and Tableau?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Both are leading business intelligence tools for building interactive dashboards.

  2. Power BI is from Microsoft, integrates closely with Excel, Azure and Microsoft 365, uses DAX for calculations and is generally cheaper for organisations already using Microsoft.

  3. Tableau, owned by Salesforce, is known for flexible, polished visualisations and strong handling of large data.

  4. The choice usually depends on the client's existing tools.

10. What is the difference between an audit and a consulting engagement?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. In a statutory audit, the auditor independently examines a company's financial statements and gives an opinion on whether they present a true and fair view, following auditing standards, and must remain independent.

  2. In consulting, the firm advises or helps the client improve something, such as processes, technology or strategy.

  3. Firms cannot provide certain consulting services to their audit clients, to protect independence.

Managerial round

Situations at work, attitude and flexibility. Sometimes combined with the technical or HR round.

11. Estimate the number of smartphones sold in India in a year. (Guesstimate)

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. Interviewers judge the structure, not the exact number.

  2. For example: India has about 140 crore people; assume around 70% are in the age group that uses smartphones, about 100 crore; assume about 75% of those own one, about 75 crore users; if people replace phones every 2.5 to 3 years, around 25 to 30 crore phones are needed a year, plus first-time buyers.

  3. State assumptions clearly and sanity-check against what you know.

12. A client's sales have dropped 20% this year. How would you find out why? (Case)

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Clarify the facts first: which products, regions and customers, and over what period.

  2. Then split the problem: is it fewer customers or lower spending per customer, and is the cause internal (pricing, product quality, sales team, distribution) or external (competitors, market demand, regulation)?

  3. Use data to test each hypothesis, prioritise the biggest drivers and recommend actions.

  4. Summarise your approach at the end.

13. The client wants a deliverable earlier than agreed. What would you do?

Understand why the date changed and what is most important to them. Assess what can realistically be delivered by the new date, then propose options with my manager, such as delivering the most important part first or adding resources, rather than promising everything and compromising quality.

14. How do you explain a technical issue to a non-technical client?

Focus on the business impact and the solution, use simple language and analogies, avoid jargon, and check understanding. For example, instead of describing a database deadlock, say "two parts of the system were waiting for each other, which caused delays; we changed the order they work in, so it will not happen again."

15. Tell me about a time you worked with a difficult team member.

Describe the situation, how you tried to understand their perspective, the steps you took to improve working together, and the outcome. Consulting work is highly team-based, so show maturity and focus on the result.
