1. What is a CMS, and how do WordPress, Shopify and Wix differ?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
A content management system lets people create and edit website content without writing code.
2
WordPress is open source and self-hosted, so it is the most flexible and has the largest plugin ecosystem, but you manage hosting, updates and security.
3
Shopify is a hosted platform built for e-commerce, with payments, inventory and checkout included for a monthly fee.
4
Wix is a hosted drag-and-drop builder that suits small business sites that need to launch quickly, with less control over code and portability.
2. What is the difference between a theme and a plugin (or app)?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
A theme controls how the site looks: layout, typography, colours and templates.
2
A plugin in WordPress, or an app in Shopify and Wix, adds functionality, such as contact forms, SEO tools, payment gateways or reviews.
3
Switching theme should change the design but keep the content and features, so business logic belongs in plugins, not the theme.
3. How do you choose a platform for a client?
Answer flow · 6 steps
1
I ask what the site must do, who will maintain it, the budget and how it might grow.
2
A blog or content-heavy site with custom needs suits WordPress.
3
An online store that wants reliable checkout without managing servers suits Shopify.
4
A simple brochure site for a non-technical owner suits Wix or Squarespace.
5
A design-led marketing site with a visual editor suits Webflow.
6
I also consider monthly costs, transaction fees, local payment gateways like Razorpay, and how easy it is to move away later.
4. What is a child theme in WordPress, and why use one?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
A child theme inherits everything from a parent theme and holds only your changes, such as extra CSS or overridden template files.
2
When the parent theme is updated, your customisations are not lost.
3
Editing a parent theme directly is a common mistake because the next update overwrites it.
5. How do domains, hosting and DNS fit together?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
A domain name, such as example.in, is registered with a registrar.
2
Hosting is the server or platform where the website files run, such as a WordPress host or Shopify.
3
DNS records connect the two: an A record or CNAME points the domain to the host, MX records route email, and TXT records verify ownership and email security.
4
Changes can take a few hours to spread.
6. Why does every website need SSL?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
An SSL/TLS certificate enables HTTPS, encrypting data between visitors and the site, which protects logins, forms and payments.
2
Browsers show "Not secure" warnings without it, Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and payment gateways require it.
3
Hosted platforms such as Shopify and Wix provide free certificates, and WordPress hosts usually offer free Let's Encrypt certificates.
7. What is a page builder?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
A page builder lets users design pages visually by dragging and dropping elements such as text, images, buttons and sections, without code.
2
Examples are the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg), Elementor, Divi, and the built-in editors in Wix, Squarespace and Shopify.
3
They make sites easy to edit, but heavy page builders can slow pages if used carelessly.
8. How should website backups be handled?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Back up both files and the database automatically and regularly, keep copies off the server in cloud storage, keep several versions, and back up before every update or major change.
2
Test restoring a backup occasionally.
3
Hosted platforms back up their infrastructure, but store owners may still need apps or exports to protect their own content and data.
9. How do you check that a website is mobile-friendly?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Preview it in browser developer tools at different screen sizes and, more importantly, on real phones.
2
Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are large enough to tap, menus work, images resize, forms are easy to fill, nothing scrolls sideways and pages load quickly on mobile data.
3
PageSpeed Insights reports mobile performance and usability issues.
10. What types of web hosting are there?
Answer flow · 5 steps
1
Shared hosting puts many sites on one server, which is cheap but slower and less isolated.
2
VPS hosting gives a virtual private server with dedicated resources and more control.
3
Managed WordPress hosting handles updates, caching, backups and security for you.
4
Cloud hosting scales resources on demand.
5
Hosted platforms such as Shopify and Wix include hosting in their subscription.
Applied problems, trade-offs and questions about your own projects.
11. How do you speed up a slow WordPress or Shopify site?
Answer flow · 5 steps
1
I measure first with PageSpeed Insights and Core Web Vitals.
2
Then I compress and resize images and serve WebP with lazy loading, remove unused plugins or apps (each one adds scripts), use a lightweight theme, and enable caching and a CDN.
3
On WordPress I add a caching plugin and object cache, and choose better hosting if the server is slow.
4
On Shopify I audit app scripts and theme code, since hosting is managed.
5
I re-test after every change.
12. How do you secure a WordPress website?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
I keep WordPress core, themes and plugins updated and remove ones that are unused.
2
I use strong passwords and two-factor authentication, limit login attempts, avoid the default "admin" username, and give users the lowest role they need.
3
I install plugins only from trusted sources, use HTTPS, add a security plugin or web application firewall, and take automatic off-site backups that I have tested restoring.
13. How do you set up an online store on Shopify or WooCommerce?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
I set up products with variants, images, prices and SKUs, organise them into collections or categories, and configure inventory tracking.
2
Then I set up payment gateways (for India, Razorpay, PayU or Shopify Payments where available), shipping zones and rates, taxes including GST, and policy pages.
3
I test the full checkout with test orders, including discount codes and email notifications, before launch.
14. How do you handle SEO on a website built with a CMS?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
I make sure every page has a unique title and meta description, one H1, clean URLs and descriptive alt text.
2
I submit an XML sitemap to Google Search Console, set canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content (a common issue with product variants and filters), add structured data such as Product and Breadcrumb, and keep pages fast and mobile-friendly.
3
Plugins like Yoast or Rank Math help on WordPress; Shopify and Wix have built-in settings.
15. How do you improve Core Web Vitals on CMS sites?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
For LCP, optimise and preload the main image, use fast hosting, caching and a CDN, and reduce render-blocking CSS and scripts.
2
For INP, remove heavy plugins and apps, delay third-party scripts such as chat widgets and trackers, and reduce JavaScript.
3
For CLS, set image dimensions, reserve space for banners and embeds and load fonts carefully.
4
Measure with PageSpeed Insights and field data in Search Console.
16. How do you troubleshoot a plugin or app conflict?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Reproduce the problem, check browser console and server error logs, then test on a staging copy by disabling plugins or apps one at a time (or all, then re-enabling one by one) and switching temporarily to a default theme, until the cause is found.
2
Then update the plugin, contact its developer, find an alternative or apply a fix.
3
Recent updates are the most common cause.
17. How do you integrate Indian payment gateways?
Choose a gateway such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, PhonePe or Paytm based on fees, supported methods (UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and EMI), settlement time and platform plugins. Complete KYC, install the official plugin or app, configure API keys, set up webhooks so orders update correctly, test with sandbox payments including failures and refunds, and add cash on delivery if needed.
18. How do you handle cookie consent and privacy on websites?
Show a consent banner that lets visitors accept or reject non-essential cookies such as analytics and advertising, and only load those scripts after consent, using a consent management tool and Google Consent Mode. Publish a clear privacy policy, collect only necessary data in forms, and follow laws such as India's DPDP Act and the GDPR for European visitors.
19. Why use a staging site?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
A staging site is a private copy of the live site where you test updates, new plugins, design changes and code before they reach real visitors.
2
Many managed hosts create staging sites with one click and push changes to live.
3
For stores, care is needed not to overwrite new orders and customers on the live site when pushing changes.
20. How do you set up analytics and tracking on a CMS site?
Install Google Analytics 4, ideally through Google Tag Manager or the platform's native integration, set up key events such as form submissions, purchases and calls, connect Google Search Console, add advertising pixels such as the Meta Pixel if needed, make sure tracking respects cookie consent, and test with Realtime and DebugView. E-commerce platforms often send purchase data automatically.
High level website builders & cms interview questions
System design, deep internals, leadership and tough follow-ups.
21. How would you migrate a site from Wix or WooCommerce to Shopify without losing SEO?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
I crawl the old site to list every URL, export products, customers and orders, and import them with a migration app or CSV.
2
I rebuild the theme and check that content, images and metadata came across.
3
The key step is setting up 301 redirects from every old URL to its new equivalent.
4
After launch I submit the new sitemap, watch Search Console for 404 errors and ranking changes, and fix any missed redirects.
22. How do you build a custom feature that no plugin or app provides?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
On WordPress I write a small custom plugin using hooks (actions and filters), custom post types, custom fields and the REST API, rather than editing the theme.
2
On Shopify I edit the theme in Liquid, use metafields and metaobjects for extra data, or build a custom app with the Admin API for back-office logic.
3
I keep custom code in version control, test it on a staging site, and document it so the client is not locked to me.
23. When would you choose a headless CMS setup?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
Headless means the CMS (WordPress, Shopify or a tool like Contentful) only stores content and exposes it through an API, and a separate frontend, often Next.js, displays it.
2
It gives full design freedom, very fast pages and the same content on web and apps.
3
The costs are more development work, a separate frontend to host, and losing some plugin features and the visual editor.
4
I recommend it for large or performance-critical sites with a development team, not for small businesses.
24. A client's WordPress site was hacked. What do you do?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
I put the site in maintenance mode, take a full backup for investigation, and change every password, including hosting, database and FTP.
2
I scan files and the database for malware, compare core files with a clean copy, and remove unknown admin users, suspicious plugins and injected code, or restore from a clean backup.
3
Then I update everything, find how the attacker got in (usually an outdated plugin or weak password), add a firewall, and request a review in Google Search Console if the site was flagged.
25. How do you scope and price a client website project?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Understand the goals, audience, number and type of pages, features (forms, store, bookings, integrations, languages), content responsibilities, design expectations, timeline and budget.
2
Write a clear scope with deliverables, revision rounds, milestones and what is excluded, estimate hours or use value-based pricing, and agree payment terms such as an advance.
3
Change requests outside scope are priced separately.
26. What should a website maintenance plan include?
Regular updates of the CMS, themes and plugins after testing, automated backups and restore tests, uptime and security monitoring, malware scanning, performance checks, broken link and form checks, small content updates, monthly reports and a response time commitment for urgent issues. Maintenance retainers give clients peace of mind and agencies recurring revenue.
27. How do you build a multilingual, multi-currency store?
Use the platform's native features or trusted apps: Shopify Markets, WooCommerce with WPML or TranslatePress and a multi-currency plugin, or Wix Multilingual. Translate products, pages, checkout and emails properly, use language-specific URLs with hreflang tags, show prices in local currencies with appropriate rounding, configure taxes, shipping and payment methods per country, and test the full checkout in each market.
28. How do you make a CMS website accessible?
Choose an accessible theme, use proper headings in order, add alt text to images, ensure sufficient colour contrast, label all form fields, make menus and interactive elements keyboard accessible with visible focus, caption videos, avoid content that flashes, and test with automated tools such as WAVE or axe and with keyboard and screen readers. WCAG 2.2 level AA is the usual target.
29. How do you plan a website's structure for SEO?
Research what customers search for, group topics into a clear hierarchy of categories and pages, keep important pages within a few clicks of the home page, use clean, descriptive URLs, create category and pillar pages that link to related content, add breadcrumbs, avoid duplicate pages from tags and filters, and generate an XML sitemap. A good structure helps both users and search engines.
30. Should a startup use a no-code builder or custom code?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
For a marketing site, a standard store or validating an idea, a no-code platform such as Webflow, Shopify, Wix or WordPress is faster and cheaper to launch and easy for non-developers to update.
2
Custom code is better when the product itself is software, with unique features, complex logic, high scale or deep integrations.
3
Many startups use no-code for marketing and custom code for the product.
