How to prepare for the Wipro interview

Technical round

Programming, OOP, DBMS, operating systems and your project, the core of most Wipro fresher interviews.

1. Tell me about your project and the technologies you used.

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Cover the problem, technologies, your role, a challenge and the outcome in about two minutes.

  2. For example: "We built an IoT-based parking system using Arduino, sensors and a Firebase backend, with an Android app showing free slots.

  3. I wrote the app and the Firebase integration.

  4. The challenge was delayed updates, which we fixed by switching to real-time listeners." Expect the interviewer to ask why you chose each technology.

2. What is inheritance? Does Java support multiple inheritance?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Inheritance lets a class (child) acquire the fields and methods of another class (parent), using extends in Java, which promotes code reuse.

  2. Types include single, multilevel and hierarchical inheritance.

  3. Java does not support multiple inheritance of classes, to avoid the diamond problem, where two parents have the same method and the child does not know which to use.

  4. Java achieves a form of multiple inheritance through interfaces, since a class can implement many interfaces.

3. What is the difference between malloc() and calloc() in C?

Both allocate memory dynamically on the heap and return a pointer. malloc(size) takes the total number of bytes and leaves the memory uninitialised, so it contains garbage values. calloc(n, size) takes the number of elements and the size of each, and initialises all bytes to zero. calloc is slightly slower because of the initialisation. Memory from both must be released with free(), and both return NULL if allocation fails.

int *a = (int *) malloc(5 * sizeof(int));  // 5 ints, garbage values
int *b = (int *) calloc(5, sizeof(int));   // 5 ints, all 0
free(a);
free(b);

4. What does the static keyword mean in Java?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. A static member belongs to the class, not to individual objects.

  2. A static variable is shared by all instances, such as a counter of how many objects were created.

  3. A static method can be called without creating an object, like Math.max(), but cannot use instance variables or this directly.

  4. A static block runs once when the class is loaded, and a static nested class does not need an instance of the outer class. main() is static so the JVM can call it without creating an object.

5. How does exception handling work in Java? What is the difference between checked and unchecked exceptions?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. Code that might fail goes in a try block; catch blocks handle specific exceptions; a finally block runs whether or not an exception occurs, for clean-up such as closing files (try-with-resources does this automatically). throw raises an exception and throws declares that a method may raise one.

  2. Checked exceptions, such as IOException, are checked at compile time and must be caught or declared.

  3. Unchecked exceptions, such as NullPointerException and ArithmeticException, extend RuntimeException and usually indicate programming errors.

try {
    int result = 10 / 0;
} catch (ArithmeticException e) {
    System.out.println("Cannot divide by zero");
} finally {
    System.out.println("Always runs");
}

6. What is an index in a database, and when should you use one?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. An index is a data structure, usually a B-tree, that lets the database find rows quickly without scanning the whole table, like the index of a book.

  2. Create indexes on columns used often in WHERE clauses, joins and ORDER BY, such as customer_id or email.

  3. Indexes speed up reads but slow down inserts, updates and deletes and use extra storage, so avoid indexing every column or small tables.

7. What are views and stored procedures?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. A view is a saved SELECT query that behaves like a virtual table; it simplifies complex queries and can restrict which columns users see, but it does not store data itself (except materialised views).

  2. A stored procedure is a set of SQL statements saved in the database and executed by name, which can take parameters, include logic such as IF and loops, and perform inserts and updates.

  3. Stored procedures reduce network traffic and keep business logic consistent.

8. Write a program to find the factorial of a number using recursion.

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. The factorial of n is n multiplied by the factorial of n minus 1, with the base case that the factorial of 0 or 1 is 1.

  2. Without a base case the recursion would never stop and cause a stack overflow.

  3. The time complexity is O(n).

  4. Mention that factorials grow very fast, so use long or BigInteger for larger numbers.

static long factorial(int n) {
    if (n <= 1) return 1;          // base case
    return n * factorial(n - 1);   // recursive case
}
// factorial(5) -> 120

9. Write a program to check whether a number is prime.

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. A prime number is greater than 1 and divisible only by 1 and itself.

  2. You only need to check divisors up to the square root of n, because any larger factor would pair with a smaller one already checked.

  3. This gives O(√n) time instead of O(n).

static boolean isPrime(int n) {
    if (n < 2) return false;
    for (int i = 2; (long) i * i <= n; i++) {
        if (n % i == 0) return false;
    }
    return true;
}

10. Explain a sorting algorithm and its time complexity.

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Bubble sort repeatedly compares adjacent elements and swaps them if they are in the wrong order; it takes O(n²) time and is simple but slow.

  2. Quick sort picks a pivot, partitions the array into smaller and larger elements, and sorts each part recursively; it averages O(n log n) but is O(n²) in the worst case.

  3. Merge sort divides the array in half, sorts each half and merges them, always taking O(n log n) time but needing O(n) extra space.

  4. Explain one in detail and know the complexities of all three.

11. What happens when you type a URL into a browser and press Enter?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. The browser checks its cache, then uses DNS to translate the domain name into an IP address.

  2. It opens a TCP connection to the server (and a TLS handshake for HTTPS), then sends an HTTP request.

  3. The server processes the request and returns a response with HTML.

  4. The browser parses the HTML, requests CSS, JavaScript and images, builds the page and renders it on screen.

12. What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. HTTP sends data as plain text, so anyone intercepting the traffic can read or change it.

  2. HTTPS is HTTP over TLS: it encrypts data between the browser and server, verifies the server's identity using a certificate issued by a certificate authority, and protects data from tampering.

  3. HTTP uses port 80 and HTTPS port 443.

  4. Every site handling logins or payments must use HTTPS, and browsers mark HTTP sites as "Not secure".

13. What is Git, and why is it used?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Git is a distributed version control system that tracks changes to code, so a team can work on the same project, see who changed what, and roll back mistakes.

  2. Common commands are git clone, git add, git commit, git push, git pull, git branch and git merge.

  3. Developers usually work on separate branches and merge them through pull requests after review.

  4. GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket host Git repositories online.

14. What is time complexity, and what is Big O notation?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. Time complexity describes how an algorithm's running time grows as the input grows.

  2. Big O notation expresses the upper bound of that growth, ignoring constants.

  3. Common examples: O(1) for array access by index, O(log n) for binary search, O(n) for a single loop, O(n log n) for merge sort, and O(n²) for nested loops such as bubble sort.

  4. It helps you compare algorithms independent of hardware.

Managerial round

Situations at work, attitude and flexibility. Sometimes combined with the technical or HR round.

15. You are given a task with an unclear requirement. What will you do?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. I would not guess.

  2. I would write down what I understood and the specific questions I have, then clarify them with my lead or the business analyst.

  3. If they are not immediately available, I would start on the parts that are clear and note my assumptions.

  4. Clarifying early avoids rework and missed expectations later.

16. A senior colleague is rude to you in front of the team. How will you react?

Answer flow · 4 steps
  1. I would stay calm and professional in the moment and not respond rudely.

  2. Later I would speak to them privately, explain how it affected me and ask whether there was a problem with my work I should fix.

  3. If it continued, I would raise it with my manager.

  4. The answer should show emotional maturity and a focus on solving the problem.

17. How do you keep yourself updated with new technologies?

Mention specific habits: "I follow a few YouTube channels and tech blogs, do short courses on platforms such as NPTEL and Coursera, and practise on LeetCode or HackerRank. Recently I completed an introductory course on cloud computing and deployed my project on a free cloud tier." Concrete examples are more convincing than general statements.

18. If you finish your work early, what will you do?

Show initiative: "I would check with my lead whether there is anything else I can pick up, help a teammate who is behind, or use the time to improve test coverage, documentation or my own skills in the project's technology." This shows you are proactive and a team player.

19. What will you do if you are not able to meet a deadline?

Answer flow · 3 steps
  1. I would tell my lead as early as I knew, explaining the reason, how much is done and a realistic new estimate, along with options such as delivering part of the work first or getting help.

  2. I would not wait until the deadline or deliver untested work.

  3. Then I would reflect on why it happened, such as under-estimating, to plan better next time.

20. Wipro has clients in many countries. How would you communicate with a client in a different time zone?

I would keep emails clear and complete so the client does not need to wait a full day to ask a follow-up question, summarise decisions after calls, and use a shared tool such as Jira or Teams to track updates. I would be flexible about meeting times for important calls and respect cultural differences in communication.
