Wix is a hosted website builder with a drag-and-drop editor, hundreds of templates, and built-in hosting, security and domains.
It suits small businesses, portfolios, restaurants, salons and service providers who want to launch and update a site without code.
It is less suitable for very large sites or projects needing full code control and easy migration to another platform.
The classic Wix Editor is a free-form drag-and-drop editor for most users.
Wix Studio is aimed at agencies and designers, with responsive layouts, advanced design controls, team collaboration and client management.
Wix ADI (artificial design intelligence) created a site automatically from answers to a few questions, and has been replaced by Wix's newer AI site builder.
In the classic editor I switch to the mobile view and adjust the automatically generated mobile layout: hiding elements that do not suit small screens, resizing text and reordering sections.
Changes in mobile view do not affect desktop.
Wix Studio uses responsive layouts with breakpoints, so I design with flexible sections, stacks and grids that adapt to each screen size.
In the classic Wix Editor you cannot switch to a different template once the site is built; you either redesign within the current site or create a new site from another template and move content over.
That is why choosing a template close to the final layout matters.
You can still change every design element, page and section within the site.
A premium plan is needed.
You can buy a domain through Wix or connect an existing one by pointing the name servers to Wix (simplest, Wix manages DNS) or by changing specific records (A and CNAME) at the current provider so email settings stay.

Changes in the editor are saved as drafts and only go live when you click Publish.
Site History keeps previous saved and published versions, so you can preview and restore an older version if something goes wrong.

I use the Wix SEO setup checklist, then set a unique title and meta description for each page, use proper headings, alt text and readable URL slugs, and connect Google Search Console so the sitemap is submitted. I set up 301 redirects when URLs change, add structured data where useful, compress images, and keep the site fast by limiting heavy apps and animations.
I add Wix Stores, create products with options, variants, prices and inventory, organise them into categories, and set up payment methods such as cards, UPI through supported providers, or cash on delivery.

Reduce heavy elements above the fold such as large videos, slideshows and animations, compress images before upload, limit the number of apps and custom embeds, use fewer fonts, keep pages focused rather than extremely long, and check the Site Speed dashboard, which reports Core Web Vitals from real users. Wix handles hosting, CDN and caching itself.
Wix Payments is available in supported countries, and other providers such as PayPal, Stripe, Razorpay, PayU and offline payments (cash on delivery or bank transfer) can be connected, depending on the country.
The choice affects fees, supported methods such as UPI and payout times.

Data hooks run backend code before or after operations on a CMS collection, such as validating or formatting data before an item is inserted (beforeInsert) or sending a notification after an update. Backend events respond to things happening in Wix apps, such as a new order (onNewOrder in Stores) or a new member, so you can sync data to external systems.

I list every page and URL with a crawler, export what Wix allows (blog posts as RSS or XML, store products as CSV and collection data as CSV) and recreate the rest manually.
