Basic After Effects interview questions
Fundamentals, definitions and simple scenarios. Good for freshers and warm-ups.
1. What is After Effects used for, and how is it different from Premiere Pro?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
After Effects is used for motion graphics, animated titles, logo animations, explainer videos, compositing and visual effects.
2
Premiere Pro is for editing long timelines of footage.
3
Typically you edit in Premiere Pro and create specific animated or VFX shots in After Effects, linking them with Dynamic Link.
2. What is a composition, and what is pre-composing?
A composition is a timeline with its own layers, size, frame rate and duration, like a sequence. Pre-composing groups selected layers into a new composition nested inside the current one, which keeps projects organised, lets you apply effects or masks to a group, and lets you reuse animations.
3. What are keyframes, and what are the transform properties?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Keyframes mark a property's value at a point in time, and After Effects interpolates between them to create animation.
2
Every layer has transform properties: anchor point (A), position (P), scale (S), rotation (R) and opacity (T).
3
Pressing U shows all keyframed properties on a layer.
4. What are the main panels in After Effects?
The Project panel holds imported footage and compositions, the Composition panel shows the current frame, the Timeline panel holds layers and keyframes, the Effects & Presets panel lists effects, Effect Controls adjusts them, and panels such as Character, Paragraph, Align, Tracker and Essential Graphics support specific tasks. Workspaces arrange panels for different jobs.
5. What layer types does After Effects have?
Footage layers (video, images and audio), solid layers (blocks of colour used as backgrounds or for effects), text layers, shape layers, null objects (invisible controllers), adjustment layers (apply effects to layers below), camera layers and light layers for 3D scenes, and precomposition layers that contain other compositions.
6. How do you animate text?
Animate text layer properties with keyframes, or use text animators, which animate properties such as position, scale, opacity, rotation, tracking and blur per character, word or line with a range selector, for effects such as letters appearing one by one. Animation presets provide ready-made text effects that can be customised.
7. Which effects are used most often?
Gaussian Blur and Camera Lens Blur, Glow, Drop Shadow, Fill, Tint, Curves and Lumetri Color, Fractal Noise for textures, Turbulent Displace for distortion, CC Particle World and Particle Playground for particles, Keylight for green screen, Warp Stabilizer for shaky footage and Echo for trails. Many effects can be combined on adjustment layers.
8. What is the difference between the Render Queue and Adobe Media Encoder?
The Render Queue renders compositions inside After Effects, which is fast for high-quality intermediate files such as ProRes or image sequences, but blocks the application while rendering. Adobe Media Encoder renders in the background, so you can keep working, supports more delivery formats such as H.264 and presets for platforms, and can queue many jobs.
9. What is motion blur in After Effects?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Motion blur makes fast-moving layers look natural by blurring them in the direction of movement, as real cameras do.
2
It is enabled per layer with the motion blur switch and for the composition with the master switch, with shutter angle settings controlling the strength.
3
It increases render time, so it is often turned off while working.
10. How do you import layered Photoshop and Illustrator files?
Import PSD or AI files as a composition, which keeps each layer as a separate layer in After Effects so it can be animated, with options to keep layer styles editable. Preparing the files with well-named, separate layers for each element to animate, and vector artwork from Illustrator, which can be converted to shape layers, saves time.
11. Why do you use precomposition?
Precomposing groups layers into a new composition that appears as a single layer, which keeps complex projects organised, lets you apply effects, masks or transforms to a group, reuse animations in several places, and control the order in which effects and transforms are processed. The "move all attributes" option controls whether effects go with the layers.

Applied problems, trade-offs and questions about your own projects.
12. What is the Graph Editor, and why does easing matter?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
The Graph Editor shows how a property changes over time as a speed graph or value graph.
2
Easing makes animation speed up and slow down naturally, rather than moving at a constant mechanical speed.
3
I use Easy Ease (F9) as a start and then shape the speed graph to create smooth, professional motion with clear acceleration and settle.
13. What are shape layers and masks?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Shape layers are vector graphics created inside After Effects, with properties for fill, stroke and operators such as Trim Paths (for line drawing animations), Repeater, Offset Paths and Merge Paths.
2
Masks are paths drawn on a layer to show or hide parts of it, with feather and expansion, and can be animated.
3
Track mattes use another layer's alpha or luminance to define visibility.
14. What is parenting, and how do null objects help?
Parenting links a child layer to a parent so it follows the parent's position, scale and rotation, while keeping its own animation. A null object is an invisible layer used as a controller: you parent several layers to it to move them together, or use it to drive camera moves and rigs.
15. How do you track motion in After Effects?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
For simple placements I use the point tracker or the 3D Camera Tracker, which analyses footage and creates a camera and track points so text or objects can sit in the scene.
2
For screen replacements I use Mocha AE planar tracking.
3
The tracking data is applied to a null, and the graphic is parented to it.
16. How do 3D layers, cameras and lights work?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Turning on the 3D switch gives a layer depth (a Z axis) and 3D rotation.
2
Camera layers let you move through the scene, with depth of field and point of interest, and light layers (point, spot, parallel and ambient) cast light and shadows.
3
Renderers such as Advanced 3D support extruded text and shapes and imported 3D models.
17. What is the Roto Brush?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
The Roto Brush separates a subject from its background across frames: you paint roughly over the subject on one frame, and AI propagates the selection through the clip.
2
Refine Edge improves hair and motion-blurred edges.
3
It is used to place text behind a person, apply effects only to the subject or replace backgrounds without a green screen.
18. What is the Puppet tool?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
The Puppet Position Pin tool places pins on a layer, and moving the pins deforms the image naturally like a mesh, which is used to animate characters, waving flags or bending objects.
2
Advanced and bend pins control rotation and scaling, and the Puppet Starch tool keeps some areas stiff.
3
Pins can be animated with keyframes or linked to nulls.
19. How do keying and compositing work in After Effects?
Keylight removes green or blue screen backgrounds, with screen gain, balance, clip black and white and spill suppression controls, and Key Cleaner and Advanced Spill Suppressor refine edges. Then the subject is composited into a new background by matching colour, light direction, perspective, grain and blur, and adding shadows so it looks like part of the scene.
20. How do you create line drawing animations with Trim Paths?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Add a Trim Paths operator to a shape layer with strokes and animate the End value from 0% to 100%, so the stroke draws on, or animate Start and End together for a moving line.
2
The Offset value shifts the visible portion.
3
Converting Illustrator artwork to shape layers lets logos and icons draw themselves on screen.
21. What is responsive design in After Effects?
Responsive Design - Time protects parts of a composition, such as the intro and outro animation, so when an editor changes the duration of a Motion Graphics Template in Premiere Pro, only the middle stretches. Combined with expressions that resize backgrounds to fit text length, templates adapt to different durations and content without breaking.
22. How do time remapping and looping work?
Time remapping adds keyframes that map composition time to the layer's time, which lets you speed up, slow down, freeze or reverse footage and precompositions within one layer. Loops can be created with the loopOut() expression on keyframed properties or time remapping, which is useful for repeating animations such as spinning icons or background motion.
High level After Effects interview questions
System design, deep internals, leadership and tough follow-ups.
23. What are expressions? Give some examples.
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Expressions are small pieces of JavaScript that control a property instead of keyframes.
2
Examples: wiggle(2, 20) adds random movement; time * 90 rotates continuously; loopOut() repeats an animation; and linking properties with the pick whip so one layer follows another.
3
Expressions combined with sliders on a control null create flexible templates.
24. How do you create templates for editors to use in Premiere Pro?
I build the animation with expressions so it adapts to text length, then use the Essential Graphics panel to expose properties such as text, colour, checkboxes and sliders. I export it as a Motion Graphics Template (.mogrt), which editors can drop into Premiere Pro and customise without opening After Effects, keeping branded titles consistent.
25. How do you keep After Effects projects fast and render efficiently?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
I organise with named and colour-coded layers and folders, pre-compose sensibly, and use proxies or lower preview resolution and region of interest while working.
2
I purge memory and disk cache when needed, avoid unnecessary heavy effects or apply them on pre-comps, and use the GPU where supported.
3
For final output I render through the Render Queue or Media Encoder to an intermediate such as ProRes, then encode deliverables.
26. How do you build rigs with expressions and controls?
Add expression controls, such as Slider, Checkbox, Colour, Angle and Point controls, to a null or control layer, and link properties to them with the pick whip, so a single slider can drive scale, colour and timing across many layers. Expressions such as linear() and ease() map ranges of values, and this creates flexible, reusable animation systems and character rigs.
27. How do you work with 3D in After Effects?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
The Advanced 3D renderer supports extruded text and shapes and imported 3D models (GLB, GLTF and OBJ) with materials and image-based lighting.
2
Cinema 4D integration through Cineware allows full 3D scenes, and plugins such as Element 3D are common for more complex work.
3
For large 3D projects, dedicated tools such as Cinema 4D or Blender are used and composited in After Effects.
28. How do you export After Effects animations for websites and apps?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
The Bodymovin plugin exports shape-based animations as Lottie JSON files, which play in websites and mobile apps as small, scalable vector animations.
2
Only supported features should be used: shape layers, masks, trim paths and basic transforms, while effects, raster images and some expressions are unsupported.
3
LottieFiles tools preview and optimise the output.
29. How do you stabilise shaky footage?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Warp Stabilizer analyses the footage and smooths or removes camera movement, with options for smooth motion or no motion, smoothness percentage and methods such as subspace warp.
2
It crops and scales the frame to hide moving edges.
3
For tracked graphics, the stabilised footage may need to be tracked again or the order of effects adjusted.
30. How do you automate After Effects work at scale?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Scripts written in ExtendScript or JavaScript automate repetitive tasks such as creating compositions, renaming layers and batch rendering.
2
Data-driven animation imports CSV or JSON files to drive text and values, which suits charts and versions in many languages.
3
Templater, Essential Graphics properties and render automation create hundreds of personalised video versions from one template.
