Basic Canva interview questions
Fundamentals, definitions and simple scenarios. Good for freshers and warm-ups.
1. What is Canva, and why do companies use it?
Canva is an online design tool with thousands of templates, photos, fonts and elements for social media posts, presentations, posters, videos and documents. Companies use it because non-designers can produce professional-looking content quickly, teams can collaborate in real time, and brand kits keep everyone on brand.
2. What are the standard sizes for social media designs?
Common sizes are 1080 x 1080 for an Instagram square post, 1080 x 1350 for a portrait post, 1080 x 1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels, 1200 x 627 for LinkedIn link images, 1280 x 720 for a YouTube thumbnail, and 1584 x 396 for a LinkedIn banner. Canva has presets for each, and platform specifications change, so I check them regularly.
3. Which file format do you export in, and when?
PNG for graphics with text, logos or transparency (Pro), JPG for photos where smaller files matter, PDF Standard for sharing documents, PDF Print with crop marks and bleed for printing, MP4 for videos and animations, GIF for short animations, and SVG for vector graphics (Pro). Presentations can also be exported as PPTX.
4. What is the difference between Canva Free, Pro and Teams?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Canva Free offers many templates, elements and basic tools.
2
Canva Pro adds premium content, Brand Kits, Magic Resize, Background Remover, more storage, transparent exports, content scheduling and more AI tools.
3
Canva Teams adds team management, brand controls, approval workflows and shared folders for organisations, and Canva Enterprise adds advanced governance and security.
5. What are frames and grids in Canva?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Frames are shapes, such as circles or device mock-ups, that crop any photo or video dropped into them, which keeps layouts neat.
2
Grids split a design into sections that each hold an image or colour, which is ideal for collages and multi-photo layouts.
3
Both make it easy to replace images without breaking the layout.
6. How do you choose and pair fonts in Canva?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Limit designs to two fonts, usually a distinctive font for headings and a simple, readable font for body text, and use font weights and sizes to create hierarchy.
2
Canva offers font combinations as starting points, and Brand Kits store the brand's fonts so everyone uses them consistently.
3
Text should be large enough to read on phones.
7. How do animations and transitions work in Canva?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Elements and pages can be animated with presets such as rise, fade, pan or typewriter, or with custom motion paths, and page transitions apply between scenes in videos and presentations.
2
Animated designs export as MP4 or GIF for social media.
3
Subtle, consistent animation looks more professional than many different effects.
8. How do you create presentations in Canva?
Start from a presentation template, apply the Brand Kit, add slides, charts, videos and speaker notes, and present directly from Canva with presenter view, or record a talking presentation with a camera bubble. Presentations can be shared as live links, downloaded as PDF or exported to PowerPoint for editing elsewhere.
9. Can you use your own images and videos in Canva?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
Yes.
2
Upload photos, videos, audio, logos and fonts (Pro), organise them in folders and reuse them in any design.
3
Uploaded content must be owned by you or properly licensed.
4
Brand assets uploaded to the Brand Kit are easy for the whole team to find and use consistently.
10. How do you edit videos in Canva?
Canva's video editor lets you combine clips, trim and split them, add text, music, transitions, animations and stickers, remove backgrounds from videos (Pro), and add auto-generated captions. Templates exist for Reels, Shorts, YouTube intros and ads, and videos export as MP4 in the right aspect ratio for each platform.
11. How do you prepare a Canva design for printing?
Use the correct print size from the start, keep important content away from the edges, and download as PDF Print with crop marks and bleed enabled; Canva Pro can also export in CMYK for professional printers. Use high-resolution images, check colours on a printed proof, or order prints directly through Canva Print.

Applied problems, trade-offs and questions about your own projects.
12. What is a Brand Kit in Canva?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
A Brand Kit, available on Canva Pro and Teams, stores a company's logos, colour palettes, fonts and brand templates in one place.
2
Team members can apply brand colours and fonts with one click and start from approved templates, which keeps content consistent even when many people create designs.
3
Brand controls can restrict editing of key elements.
13. How do you make a Canva design look professional rather than template-like?
I customise templates heavily rather than only changing the text: apply the brand fonts and colours, use a clear visual hierarchy with one main message, keep plenty of white space, align elements using the grid and guides, limit fonts to two, use high-quality relevant images, and stay consistent across a series of posts so the brand is recognisable.
14. Which Canva Pro features do you use most?
Brand Kit, Magic Resize (Resize & Magic Switch) to turn one design into every social size, Background Remover, premium stock photos and elements, transparent PNG export, the content planner to schedule posts, Magic Studio AI tools for writing, editing and generating images, and version history.
15. How do you collaborate with a team in Canva?
I organise designs into shared folders, share designs with edit or comment access, and use comments with @mentions to give feedback. Brand templates let others create designs safely, approval workflows ensure designs are reviewed before publishing, and real-time co-editing means several people can work on one design.
16. What is Bulk Create?
Bulk Create generates many versions of a design from data, by connecting text and image placeholders to columns in a spreadsheet or CSV. It is used for certificates with different names, product posts with different prices and images, event badges and personalised social posts, saving hours of manual editing.
17. How do brand templates and locking help teams?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Brand templates are designs approved by the brand or design team that others start from, so they cannot accidentally change the base design.
2
Elements can be locked for position or fully, so team members can only edit specific text or images.
3
With brand controls, admins can restrict colours, fonts and uploads to approved options.
18. What does Canva's Magic Studio include?
Magic Studio includes AI tools such as Magic Write for drafting text, Magic Design for creating designs from a prompt or image, Magic Edit to replace parts of an image with a prompt, Magic Eraser to remove objects, Magic Expand to extend images, Magic Grab to move image elements, Magic Switch to resize and translate designs, and AI image and video generation.
19. How do you make Canva designs accessible?
Use high contrast between text and background, readable font sizes, clear hierarchy and plenty of space, avoid putting important text over busy images, never rely on colour alone, add alt text to images in documents and websites, provide captions for videos, and use Canva's accessibility checks for contrast and reading order. Descriptive file names and post captions help too.
20. How does Canva's content planner work?
The content planner lets Pro and Teams users schedule designs to publish directly to connected social media accounts, such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest, on chosen dates and times with captions. It gives a calendar view of upcoming posts, which helps keep a consistent posting schedule.
21. Which Canva apps and integrations are useful?
Canva apps add features inside the editor, such as charts from data, QR code generators, mock-ups, translation and AI tools. Integrations connect Canva with Google Drive, Dropbox, HubSpot, social platforms and more, so designs can be imported and published easily, and the Connect APIs let companies integrate Canva into their own products.
22. How do you design carousel posts?
Plan the story across slides: a strong hook on the first slide, one point per slide, and a call to action at the end. Design in one wide canvas or a set of consistent pages, keep fonts, colours and layout consistent, use slide numbers or arrows to encourage swiping, and export each page as an image (or a PDF for LinkedIn document posts).
High level Canva interview questions
System design, deep internals, leadership and tough follow-ups.
23. How would you plan and produce a month of social media content in Canva?
I agree the content calendar and themes first, then create a set of branded templates for each content type, such as tips, quotes, carousels and announcements. I use Bulk Create with a spreadsheet to generate many variations, resize for each platform, have them reviewed through comments or approvals, and schedule them with the content planner or another scheduling tool.
24. What are Canva's limitations compared with Adobe tools?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Canva has limited precise vector editing, no professional colour management such as full CMYK and spot colour control for complex print jobs, simpler photo editing and animation, and less control over typography.
2
For logos, packaging or advanced print and photo work I use Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign.
3
Canva excels at speed, templates and collaboration.
25. How do you ensure your Canva designs are legally safe to use?
I use content within Canva's licence terms: free and Pro elements can be used commercially in designs, but not resold as-is or used in trademarks, so a logo should be built from original or licensed elements. I avoid using brands, celebrities or copyrighted characters without permission, check fonts are licensed, and keep a record of sources for any images uploaded from elsewhere.
26. How would you set up Canva as a design system for a company?
Create Brand Kits with logos, colours, fonts and brand guidelines, build a library of approved brand templates for common needs such as social posts, presentations and flyers, lock key elements, organise shared folders, set user roles, enable brand controls and approval workflows, and train the team. Regular reviews retire outdated templates and add new ones.
27. How does Canva compare with Adobe Express?
Answer flow · 4 steps
1
Both are template-based tools for quick social media, marketing and presentation designs, with AI features, brand kits and scheduling.
2
Canva has a very large template and community library and strong team collaboration.
3
Adobe Express integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud, Firefly and Adobe Fonts, and suits teams already using Photoshop and Illustrator.
4
The choice often depends on existing tools.
28. How do you measure whether your Canva designs perform well?
Track the metrics of the channel where designs are used: engagement rate, saves and shares on social media, click-through rate on ads and emails, and conversions on landing pages. Test variations of visuals, such as different headlines, colours or images, compare results, and update templates based on what performs best.
29. How do large organisations govern Canva use?
Canva Enterprise provides single sign-on, user provisioning, admin controls over who can publish and share externally, brand controls restricting fonts, colours and uploads to approved options, approval workflows before designs are published, multiple brands in one account, and audit logs. Clear guidelines on licences and AI use keep content compliant.
30. How do you hand off Canva designs to agencies or printers?
Answer flow · 3 steps
1
Export print files as PDF Print with bleed and crop marks, in CMYK when required, and share high-resolution images separately.
2
Designs can be exported to PowerPoint, or shared with edit access for others to adjust.
3
Canva designs cannot be converted reliably into fully layered Illustrator or Photoshop files, so complex print or packaging work is usually redone in professional tools.
